I have always found that attempting to capture a likeness in a figure drawing over a long period of time was a crucial artistic endeavor. It refines one skills in the direct observation of the subject matter, and this process also increases the concentration of the artist, sometimes into a trance-like state.

The process, however, is one that is full of pitfalls since at some point we let what we know hinder us in what we see, especially during the development of the figure through value. It is also interesting to note that in the search for new visual solutions in the arts and artistic self-expression, that on many occasions, we turn back to direct observation drawing to solve a problem.
